{"id":5036,"date":"2014-06-03T12:31:07","date_gmt":"2014-06-03T12:31:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jacques-canetti.com\/en\/notre-histoire\/"},"modified":"2016-08-10T19:09:07","modified_gmt":"2016-08-10T17:09:07","slug":"our-story","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/jacques-canetti.com\/en\/our-story\/","title":{"rendered":"Our story"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=&#8221;5466&#8243; img_size=&#8221;medium&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>\u00ab The Jacques Canetti Productions are to the French song what &#8220;Blue Note&#8221; is to jazz\u00bb*<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In the summer of 1962 Jacques Canetti resigned from Philips for whom he had created, as artistic director, the most prestigious catalogue of <em>chansons fran\u00e7aises<\/em> including authors, composers and performers who were to become, in under 50 years, the standard against which a whole new generation of singers, comedians, musicians\u2026and artistic directors, measured themselves.<\/p>\n<p>In September 1962, Jacques Canetti founded the first independent record label in France: <strong><em>Les Productions Jacques Canetti<\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>By doing so he made it clear that he wanted to continue to produce music as a \u201ccraftsman\u201d, as he always had done. At the height of the pop music revolution when singles were taking over the music market, when artists became famous for a single song, when radio was blasting out hits*, Jacques Canetti proved to be resolutely against the flow of what the music industry was becoming: show business. *A phrase coined by <strong>Boris Vian<\/strong>[\/vc_column_text]<div class=\"gap\" style=\"line-height: 40px; height: 40px;\"><\/div>[\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column]<div class=\"dt-fancy-separator title-left h3-size\" style=\"width: 100%;\"><div class=\"dt-fancy-title\" style=\"color: #c10435;\"><span class=\"separator-holder separator-left\"><\/span>A mythical graphic design<span class=\"separator-holder separator-right\"><\/span><\/div><\/div><div class=\"gap\" style=\"line-height: 20px; height: 20px;\"><\/div>[\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_column_text]Jacques Canetti was the first to create a \u201chouse-style book\u201d for his label that music fans would rapidly recognise and which some of them would remember for a long time.<\/p>\n<p>Jacques Canetti personally wrote the names of the artists that he signed on the 12\u201d sleeves of the vinyls: a style of handwriting that is recognisable anywhere.<\/p>\n<p>To begin with, the albums are printed in two colours \u2013 black\/white and red \u2013 with a rich palette of greys that run through the inside pages. The actor turned out to be a great performer. The first album did not enjoy great commercial success, but Canetti persisted and produced <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/jacques-canetti.com\/produit\/cd-dvd\/serge-reggiani-12-succes-originaux\/\">Reggiani\u2019s second album<\/a><\/strong> with songs that even now are still on everyone\u2019s lip :\u00a0l<em>es Loups, le Petit Gar\u00e7on, Ma Libert\u00e9, le D\u00e9serteur<\/em> \u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 1966 he produced the first albums of two young unknown performers :<strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jacques-canetti.com\/mot-cle-produit\/jacques-higelin\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jacques Higelin<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jacques-canetti.com\/mot-cle-produit\/brigitte-fontaine\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Brigitte Fontaine<\/strong><\/a>. These albums were to be successful\u2026only much later.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 1967, he recorded a collection of<strong> \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jacques-canetti.com\/mot-cle-produit\/boris-vian\/\" target=\"_blank\">Boris Vian<\/a>&#8216;s<\/strong>\u00a0songs, in 1975 one by <a href=\"https:\/\/jacques-canetti.com\/mot-cle-produit\/jacques-prevert\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Jacques Pr\u00e9vert<\/strong><\/a>, in 1985 songs by <a href=\"https:\/\/jacques-canetti.com\/produit\/partitions\/partitions-cocteau\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Jean Cocteau<\/strong><\/a>\u2026 He also recorded live albums by <strong>Simone Signoret<\/strong> (<em>La voix humaine<\/em>\u00a0from Cocteau in 1963), <a href=\"https:\/\/jacques-canetti.com\/mot-cle-produit\/cora-vaucaire\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Cora Vaucaire<\/strong><\/a> (at the\u00a0<em>Th\u00e9\u00e2tre de la Ville<\/em>\u00a0in 1973), <a href=\"https:\/\/jacques-canetti.com\/mot-cle-produit\/catherine-sauvage\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Catherine Sauvage<\/strong><\/a> (sings\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jacques-canetti.com\/mot-cle-produit\/leo-ferre\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>L\u00e9o Ferr\u00e9<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0at the T<em>h\u00e9\u00e2tre de l\u2019Est Parisien<\/em> en 1984). He also recorded shows: in 1972, Boris Vian\u2019s only musical, \u00ab\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jacques-canetti.com\/produit\/partitions\/partitions-vian-la-bande-a-bonnot\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>La bande \u00e0 Bonnot<\/em><\/a>, the French version of Bertold Brecht\u2019s Threepenny Opera. He also created a repertoire of recordings for children including the songs of 20<sup>th<\/sup> century artists\u00a0(<strong>Pr\u00e9vert<\/strong>, <strong>Queneau<\/strong>, <strong>Desnos<\/strong>, <strong>Vian<\/strong>, <strong>Tardieu<\/strong>, etc..).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Almost every disc from the Jacques Canetti label has received a <\/em>Grand Prix du Disque<em> upon release.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>\u201cWhen at the age of 53 our father became \u201cindependent\u201d by creating his own music label, we lived with the ups and downs, swinging between euphoria and disappointment. A wonderful way to learn, at the age of 12 or 13, that life is no merry-go-round\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>Fran\u00e7oise Canetti<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text]<div class=\"gap\" style=\"line-height: 40px; height: 40px;\"><\/div>[\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column]<div class=\"dt-fancy-separator title-left h3-size\" style=\"width: 100%;\"><div class=\"dt-fancy-title\" style=\"color: #c10435;\"><span class=\"separator-holder separator-left\"><\/span>The Canetti shows and tours <span class=\"separator-holder separator-right\"><\/span><\/div><\/div><div class=\"gap\" style=\"line-height: 20px; height: 20px;\"><\/div>[vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Jacques Canetti has always been a showman\u2026Even if he had to give up on the <em>Th\u00e9\u00e2tre des Trois Baudets,<\/em> which he was forced to shut down in 1967\u2026he produced a multitude of shows involving \u201chis\u201d artists. Between 1978 and 1988, he went to Avignon for several years running, where he produced the shows of <a href=\"https:\/\/jacques-canetti.com\/mot-cle-produit\/boris-vian\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Vian<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/jacques-canetti.com\/mot-cle-produit\/jacques-prevert\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Pr\u00e9vert<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jacques-canetti.com\/produit\/partitions\/partitions-cocteau\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Cocteau<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jacques-canetti.com\/mot-cle-produit\/sarah-boreo\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Sarah Bor\u00e9o<\/strong><\/a>, <strong>Jean Bourbon<\/strong>, <strong>Renaud Marx<\/strong>, <strong>Bee Michelin<\/strong>, <strong>Bruno Brel<\/strong>, <strong>Jean-Marie Hummel<\/strong> et <strong>Liselotte Ham<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In June 1965, he opened one of the first \u201c<em>caf\u00e9-th\u00e9\u00e2tres<\/em>\u201d at the <em>Bilboquet<\/em> to present \u201c<em>Cin\u00e9-Song<\/em>\u201d where a young <a href=\"https:\/\/jacques-canetti.com\/mot-cle-produit\/jacques-higelin\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Jacques Higelin<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0would polish some of the songs from his first album. And what to say of Eus, a village perched in the Roussillon region where <a href=\"https:\/\/jacques-canetti.com\/mot-cle-produit\/lucienne-vernay\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lucienne<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jacques-canetti.com\/mot-cle-produit\/jacques-canetti\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jacques Canetti<\/a>\u00a0loved to spend their \u2018studious holidays\u2019. There, Canetti created, along with his friends and children, a \u201c<em>caf\u00e9 de village\u201d<\/em> to present \u201chis\u201d artists. Certain artists chose to make Eus their summer residence.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><em style=\"color: #4a4542;\">\u00ab\u00a0<\/em>D\u00e9velopper quelqu\u2019un, c\u2019est avoir de la patience, parler, insister, le d\u00e9fendre, croire durablement en lui, lui insuffler sa confiance. They experienced all the passions and all the determination of their father and resisted to the siren calls of all the major labels that wanted to buy the titles in the catalogue.<\/p>\n<p>Up until 2004 the label was under licence with Universal and remarkable work was done with <strong>Christian de Tarlet<\/strong>. But in 2004, Fran\u00e7oise embarked on another strategy. No more licensing ! She took the risk of producing the label\u2019s records and looked for a distributor. At this point <strong>Emmanuel de Buretel<\/strong> launched the Because venture. The Jacques Canetti label was to be his first signing as a distributor. An admirer and friend of Jacques Canetti, Emmanuel de Buretel remains Fran\u00e7oise\u2019s best advisor.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Fran\u00e7oise therefore made it a point of honour to republish the recordings of the label with the same house-style book that her father had created\u2026In under 30 years, some of the recordings have become \u201cclassics\u201d. She brought together and completed Jacques Canetti\u2019s work with new recordings such as the recordings of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/jacques-canetti.com\/mot-cle-produit\/serge-reggiani\/\" target=\"_blank\">Serge Reggiani<\/a>&#8216;s Letters read<\/strong>\u00a0by himself,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jacques-canetti.com\/mot-cle-produit\/jacques-prevert\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Jacques Pr\u00e9vert<\/strong> r<\/a>ead by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jacques-canetti.com\/mot-cle-produit\/jeanne-moreau\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Jeanne Moreau<\/strong><\/a>, <strong>Annie Girardot<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Richard Bohringer<\/strong>, <strong>Ludmila Mika\u00ebl<\/strong>, <strong>Catherine Arditi<\/strong>, or even the songs of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jacques-canetti.com\/mot-cle-produit\/boris-vian\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Boris Vian<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0directed by\u00a0<strong>Laurent Pelly<\/strong> and recorded with the artists of the National Dramatics Centre in Grenoble.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, with the priceless help of FNAC, Fran\u00e7oise Canetti was able to publish <em>exclusive collections<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text]<div class=\"gap\" style=\"line-height: 20px; height: 20px;\"><\/div>[\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_column_text]In May 2009,<a href=\"https:\/\/jacques-canetti.com\/produit\/cd-dvd\/boris-vian-100-chansons\/\" target=\"_blank\"> BORIS VIAN \u2013 100 chansons<\/a>\u00a0was a compilation of the greatest performers of <a href=\"https:\/\/jacques-canetti.com\/mot-cle-produit\/boris-vian\/\" target=\"_blank\">Boris Vian<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In 2011, a compilation of the greatest performers of Jacques Canetti label were reissued\u2026\u00a0Finally, in 2012, the <strong>\u201cunfindable\u201d records of the Jacques Canetti label<\/strong> were republished with the help of the FNAC.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 2015, The<em><strong>\u00a0Jacques Canetti Productions<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0are opening overseas and distributed in Canada for the first time by <em>Select<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">At the end of 2014, The third\u00a0&#8220;<i>exclusive<\/i>&#8221; is out.
